Executive Owner:
Senior Vice President Operational Strategy & Learning
Scope:
The scope of this standard operating procedure is for all qualified retiring faculty.
Purpose:
The purpose is to define the procedures for nominating and electing a retired faculty for Emeritus Status.
Procedures:
- Nominations for emeritus, or posthumous emeritus status, with supporting evidence for the above criteria should be submitted to the Provost 6 months prior to the anticipated retirement or initiated within two years following retirement.
- The title “posthumous emeritus” may also be awarded to faculty who die before retiring. Nominations must be initiated within two years following death.
- The department chair provides the Provost with a nomination letter summarizing the retiree’s career, letters of recommendations, and the department’s vote and recommendation.
- The nomination letter should refer to specific evidence of the nominee’s qualifications. Although the application need not include the materials themselves, evidence such as publications, awards, and acknowledgements of outstanding service should be cited in sufficient detail.
- The chair’s letter also should indicate whether the professor prefers the title to be emeritus or emerita.
- If the Provost approves the recommendation, the Provost submits the departmental materials to the President’s Council for recommendation to the Board of Trustees for final approval.
- A letter from the President notifies and congratulates the professor. The Emeritus status is effective the day following official retirement from the university.
