Scope: 
All employees of AdventHealth University (AHU).
Purpose: 
The purpose of this procedure is to provide the guidelines to determine the days off for holidays at AHU.
Procedures: 

AdventHealth University has 11 holidays for employees.  Six holidays are required to be taken off and five holidays are optional. 

Required Holidays - For the six required holidays the AHU campuses are officially closed, meaning there are no classes and no security personnel on campus.  Employees are not to work on these six required holidays, unless they have permission from their direct supervisor and President Council member. 

Optional Holidays - For the five optional holidays, there will be no classes, faculty have the time off, and security will be on campus.  An employee who wants to work on an optional holiday instead of using their PDO needs to inform their manager of their desire to work. The manager will inform the employee if there is work available and whether the work is to be done on campus or remote.  Services such as IT, Library, etc. will be limited and may not be available.  

Those holidays are:

  • New Year's Day (1)
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (1) (optional)
  • Memorial Day (1)
  • Juneteenth (1) (optional)
  • Independence Day (1)
  • Labor Day (1)
  • Thanksgiving (3) (Wednesday and Friday optional)
  • Christmas (2) (one day optional*)

The following is the determination of holidays based on the day the holiday occurs:

If a holiday falls on a Saturday, the day off will be taken on a Friday.
If a holiday falls on a Sunday, the day off will be taken on a Monday.
Thanksgiving holiday is Wednesday through Friday.
Christmas days off are as follows:

  • If either the 24th or 25th fall on a Saturday or Sunday- the days off will be Friday and Monday
  • If both the 24th or 25th fall on weekdays- the days off will be on those actual days

*Christmas days required are as follows:

  • If the 25th falls on a weekday 
  • If the 25th falls on a Saturday - the required day off is Friday
  • If the 25th falls on a Sunday - the required day off is Monday
Definition(s): 

Paid Days Off (PDO) (Staff): The benefit given to eligible employees with which all time off is referenced. PDO applies to holidays, sick, personal, and vacation days off.

Holiday Days Off (Faculty):  Faculty are given the holidays that are listed in addition to their vacation time.
